I just read an article which stated that Cliff Lee felt the Yankees were too old -the reason why he signed with the Phillies for less money. I respect him for the honest comment, but I looked a few stats and this is what I found:

The average age of Yankee regulars: (I understand that the starting roster is not entirely fixed, so some is assumed.)
    Sabathia, 30
    Hughes, 24
    Burnett, 34
    Nova, 24
    Colon, 37
    Garcia, 34
Average starting pitcher age: 30.5 years

    Joba, 25
    Feliciano, 34
    Logan, 26
    Rivera, 41
    Soriano, 31
    Robertson, 25
Average relief age: 30.3 years (Yes, Mo’s age accounts for the high number)

    Gardner, 27
    Granderson, 29 (30 in a few days)
    Swisher, 30
    Tex, 30
    Jeter, 36
    A-Rod, 35
    Cano, 28
    Posada, 39
    Martin, 28
    Cervelli, 25
    Average hitter age: 30.7 years

    Average starter age: 30.5
    Standard deviation 5.05

Hence, most of our players are within the age bracket of 25-35 years of age.
Cliff Lee -he is 32. This means that he would be raising the average age of the Yankees. Lee also falls in the first standard deviation from the 30.5 average. Of course, had he signed, we probably would have a slightly younger staff -not needing Garcia or Colon.

    Phillies:
    Halladay, 33,
    Lee, 32
    Oswalt, 33
    Hamels, 27
    Blanton, 30
Average starting pitcher age: 31 years

    Relief??

    Batters:
    Howard, 31
    Polanco, 35
    Rollins, 32
    Utley (who is out), 32
    Victorino, 30
    Ibanez, 38
    ??
Average age for hitting regulars: 33 years

I’m not going to figure out the other stats, it is not worth my time.

In other words: “Keep your mouth shut, Cliff!” I can understand your desire to sign with another team, but please do not open your mouth in order to stuff your foot down your throat.
