Game 88: Now *that’s* what you call dominant.

After an emotional come-from-behind victory yesterday afternoon, which capped off Derek Jeter’s historic day, the Yankees took to the field in the final game before the All-Star break to look for a series win against the Rays (owing to the 2nd game being PPD).  Thankfully CC Sabathia was up to the task of helping the team accomplish that.

Our pitching this afternoon consisted of one thing:  CC Sabathia.  He turned in a stellar, absolutely ass-kicking performance, pitching a complete game shut-out.  He gave up only four hits and no earned runs, walking just one and striking out nine.  You’re not going to find any complaints from me for that.  Kudos to Girardi for letting him finish the game, since he has a bad habit of going to the bullpen when a pitcher is throwing a game like this.

Our offense wasn’t all that great, but Shields is one hell of a pitcher, so it goes to figure.  Derek went 1-4 this afternoon, so he’s now at 3,004 for the career, and at 2,976 as a shortstop – so there’s still another countdown to 3,000 hits to watch.  That may be confusing to some of you, so I’ll explain.  Obviously the great majority of Derek’s hits have come as a SS, but he has DH’d and that accounts for the rest of them.  With another 24 hits, he’ll have 3,000 as a shortstop – the first player in history to say that.  He’s already got so many accolades to his name, this would just be another one.  Our other three hits came from Robbie, Gardy, and Nunez.

I hope all our players enjoy their short vacay for the ASG, and I’ll be posting my thoughts on the absurdity that is the All-Star Game….probably tomorrow or so.
